Ways To Stop Dog Barking

Dogs No Comments »

Have you ever been aggravated in trying to manage your dog’s barking? Have you ever found yourself creating as much noise as your dog, yelling at her trying to get her to stop barking? You’re not alone, but don’t give up, here are some ideas.

When it comes to training your dog in the area of bark control there are various routes that you can take and so many times it comes down to a personal preference or approach. However, with any training, it’s important that your dog comes to understand that you are the master and she needs to follow your command. The best way to implement this is by rewarding your dog when she does do what you tell her to do.

It’s also extremely important to train your dog in such a way as to never cause your dog to be frightened of you. Just think about it.  I doubt if you’d heed someone if you felt threatened by them. So you’ll find much better methods.

So for stop dog barking training, start by figuring out why it is your dog is barking. There are times when it’s acceptable for your dog to bark and she should therefore be afforded that right. It’s the unnecessary, uncontrollable barking that you want stopped. The primary thing is to help your dog understand the difference between them.

Bark collars containing a device that  delivers a gentle shock when the dog barks is one way some owners have taken to turn the bark off. Depending on the design, these devices vary in how they work.  The more sophisticated ones become progressive in the strength of the shock they give. You hear good reports about the effectiveness of these bark deterrents, however this is not the number one choice for many.

With that in mind, one alternative that manufacturers have come out with is the citronella bark collar. With these collars, after a dog barks, the device on the collar sprays citronella into the air in front of the dog. Because dogs do not like the citronella smell they learn to stop barking to escape from the smell. Though this seems a more humane method of bark control, it might not be the first choice for an indoor dog silencer.

A different option to the bark collars to stop dog barking is an ultrasonic sound device. With these devices a sound frequency detected by dogs, though inaudible to humans, is sent out when they start barking. Hearing this sound interrupts their barking and causes them to settle down. The bonus of this product is it will not only stop your dog from barking, it will silence the other dogs who may be the ones causing your dog to bark.

These ultrasonic dog barking devices have become sought after with people who aren’t even dog owners, but have neighbours who have not taken the time to train their yappy dogs not to bark. They will put the device close enough to become activated by the dog’s barking and it will do its thing; a subtle strategy to turn the bark off.

Dogs bark; that’s what they do and it’s beneficial to keep that in mind. You don’t want them not to bark, you just want them to bark appropriately. For bark control or any other training, positive reinforcement can be very helpful. So if you commend  your dog for not barking when she is silent, you may be pleasantly surprised at how discriminating your dog becomes in choosing when to bark, regardless of what approach to bark control you decide upon.
