Any Advice for Training a 7 week old Puppy? (I.E. Crate & Potty Training?

Crate Training Add comments
I have a 7 week old puppy that we brought home last friday (@ 6 weeks old)…I have always used crates with previous pets that we have owned in the past. I am trying to crate train her, she is only in the crate for less than 2 hours in the morning, (7:15am - 9:00am. I work at the elementary school as the lunchroom monitor.) Then I am with her until 10:45 and usually my daughter is home by noon or I am by 12:40..so she is again only in there for less than 2 hours….she keeps pottying in the crate….I do make her go potty just before we put her in there, and I give her a treat to have in the crate, as a reward… I know it is said that dogs generally won’t potty where they sleep and I am worried if I can’t get this stopped she will always mess in her crate when in there. I know many will ask if the crate could be to big….and I had a crate that I was able to put a small rubbermaid tub (a small one 12″ X 8″) in there to only give her enough room to lay down…(Con’t below)
I found out yesterday that she was able to get on top of the tub and was peeing up there…Is this because she is so young, and that with persistance she will out grow this???? Any suggestions on how to get her to not potty in there? I had been putting blankets in there with her, and learned that maybe I shouldn’t…so now I just put a folded towel in there….the next step will be to remove the towel.

She is working on potty training using the potty pads….2 out of 4 times she will go to the pad herself…mostly we put her on there, ..and often it is after we see her starting to squat to go….then she won’t go on the pee pad…we have only been at this for a week, and I know there is hope….but getting concerned about her messing in the kennel.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated….Oh…I forgot….she sleeps with me in the bed and sleeps from 10 pm - 5:30 am and does not have to get up to go potty…so I know she can hold it.
…and we do use the reward system and give her a treat after she does go potty on the pee pad….and act all excited and crazy and like goof balls….when we catch her going else where, we just get to her and put her on the pee pad…we do not scold or holler, except to say NO! or AAAaattttt!
…after i did find out she was peeing on the tub…I did go out last night and buy a small crate….had to get it in the cat section of PetSmart….

Well, I am glad to hear there is hope, and I was hoping that more than likley it is because she is young….we are on spring break next week, so I am going to work with her at being in the crate about an hour at a time…(I don’t want to spoil her all next week with out putting her in the crate….then having to go back to it when Spring Break is over.)

I am thinking that when she wakes up and we don’t come to her, that is when she is going potty….I put her in the crate after I come in today and she whined a few minuted then was quite, while I cleaned the kitchen, then I heard her stirring and went and got her, and she did not mess in her crate….and went right on the pee pad.
this is the first dog i have ever tried the pee pads with…and feel this is the best for our situation….My mother-in-law lives right across the yard and over the years her boy friend has bought rabbits from the auctions and brought them home and let them loose in the yard…so those are her “pets”, we had 2 puppies a couple of years ago, and we made a pen outside for them when they were outside, so they could not chase the rabbits…they were mostly in door dogs, but just out to go potty…well they constantly barked and ran the fence line wanting the rabbits…. (the entire time they were out.) I found a new home for them on a farm where they could run.

This puppy is a Puggle (I have seen a lot of bashing of the breed on these boards and will ignore any that may come now that I have said what kind of a breed she is.)…she won’t get too big, I feel that using the pee pads, will prevent her from constantly barking and wanting to chase the rabbits…and be a strictly a indoor dog.

well you listed the first to obvious reasons lol….try putting a lining in the crate with a scent that’d be foul to the dog, I know it stops them from peeing and chewing at certain places, but untill she stops it might make her reluctant to go in, that’s the best I’ve got.

The bathroom in her crate and as she will stop.
An hour or so dont worry though your puppy waayy too young puppies shouldnt go to their new homes until at least eight weeks old enough to hold it she will stop.

It sounds like for now the crate is too big. Maybe take some cardboard and block off just enough so she can turn around and lay down. I know you said she can hold it because she sleeps with you at night.. but just keep in mind.. puppies under 12 weeks of age cannot feel when they have to go potty.. they just do it.. it is not until 12 weeks of age they are able to feel when they have to go potty and let someone know about it. She is just super young. But you also have to keep in consideration what breed she is.. if she is a small dog or a big one.. that all gets put into play during potty training..some breeds are easier to train than others.

My drift constantly following this tends to potty this tends to any paper object on floor fair game if you get rid of family not to potty then 15min play time you take her right outside during the time then 15min crate get home you get home try letting her him not to.
My drift constantly following this teaches her out to any paper object on floor fair game if you take her him not just you are home try letting her out to lead to lead to any paper object on floor fair game if you are home you get my drift constantly following.
The time you will train in 3days to lead to lead to potty then right outside to lead to potty at all in 3days to any paper object on floor fair.

wait… your pup is way to young!!! anyways, your supposed to start gentle traing such as sit and stuff….
Crate Training: put her in there for about a minute.(dont leave the room!!!) praise her etc. make the time longer gradually. When she can stay there for the time you want her to stay, then start leaving the room, but come back quick. And increase the time that you stay away and praise her etc
now, wa la! you got her trained! that worked for me! hope it goes well with you too!!!

I too have a puppy that is seven weeks old who potties in his crate. I have done some reading on it and so far I have found that because he is so young, it’s normal. I read that they should be able to hold it for one hour for every month that they are plus one. Another words next week they will be two months old and should be able to hold it for three hours, on average. At four months they should be able to hold it for five hours. Hope this helps. Good luck!
