Crate Training Advice for a Puppy?

Crate Training Add comments

Question posted from Mono

I have a 13-week old puppy who is very sweet, loveable, and thankfully nothing special in terms of any ’special’ destructive tendencies. I am crate training him, I’ve owned several dogs before but this is the first time I’ve ever crate trained before, does anyone have any advice? ANY whatsoever would be GREATLY appreciated, I value your input!

Thank you so much!

Be persistent and consistent. Put a few toys in the crate and a blanket.

I agree with Brandy. He will cry his head off but you just have to let him. He will get over it. It took my dog about a week to get used to it.

make sure that you stick to your procedure

the dog needs to be trained by you not the other way around..

my mom got a new puppy and tried to crate train it but everytime it would whine or bark she would let it out.. now it knows that if it whines enough it can get out of the crate.

The trick is to introduce it as a safe, comfy home rather than a prison (i.e - don’t put him in there to “punish” him for any reason whatsoever - he will eventually learn that his cage is “the bad place” and will give you flack every time you want him to go in the cage because he views it as punishment)

Make sure its comfy - put his bed or favorite blanket and favorite toy in there. Lure him in with training treats and give lots of positive praise. Allow him to look around and get used to his new “home away from home” and praise him while he’s looking around. Don’t shut the door on the crate just yet - make sure he’s really comfortable. When he’s comfortable enough with being in the crate, start saying things like “Good crate” Get him to associate the word crate with being in it, the goal here is to have him go to the crate when you say crate.

Always remember to leave fresh water in the crate he is in there for any extended period of time.

Feeding him his meals in the crate couldn’t hurt either - he’ll associate the crate with getting food eventually.

Another helpful tip is to cover the crate with towels or a sheet at night when he’s in there. If he doesn’t see any distractions, he won’t want out of the crate.

    Hope I helped!

We trained alot of dogs with the crate, We leave them in there only to go out side and to come out and play a little then they go back to the crate after about a month then we let them out a little longer, then they new to go to the back door, then we would let them out a little longer and as time went on they go to the back door to go out side, no dog is perfect they will have accidents, good luck
