I have a 8 month old dog, who is going to begin crate training. I also, have a 4 year old dog that will not be crate trained (since she’s already trained and an amazing dog). Lexi (the 8 month puppy) is going to be crate trained for the first time. I’m unsure how to do crate training … let alone with another dog in the house. Where is the best place to put the crate when the other dog will be open to the whole house and Lexi wont. Where should I put the crate? What should I put in the crate for Lexi? I can use any advice to help make crate training successful since Lexi doesn’t seem to like any other type of training. Please I need as much info as I can get to make Lexi a dog we can keep.

When did yu get your puppy you should have started crate training her since you got her. But if you crate her at night put the crate next your bed (yes you better expect whineing) but when she does just say her name and stick your hand were she can smell it.

First, try putting her crate somewhere quiet and away from the commotion of the household. Sometimes laundry rooms or spare bedrooms work well. Just make sure it isn’t drafty or somewhere you wouldn’t want to sleep!
Second, she will whine. A lot. I have found that putting a radio on in the room will comfort them, especially talk radio. You can set it low enough that no one will be bothered by it.
Third, if she isn’t potty trained completely, do NOT put a blanket or towel in for her. Dogs don’t like to lie in their own urine so a blanket would soak it up and she wouldn’t understand that it is a “no potty zone.” Otherwise, a blanket or towel is all that should be put in. Toys are not a good idea because in reality toys should only be used with your interaction.
Last of all, good luck. Most dogs take well to crate training and in the future Lexi will be able to understand that her crate is a safe haven.
